SHS Hosts Empty Bowls

Once again this year, Springdale Jr-Sr High School students sponsored the Empty Bowls program. For the past eleven years, art students have created bowls, dishes, and mugs, while family and consumer science students cook a lunch of soup, salad, and dessert. Those attending pay a small fee for the meal and a bowl. Any funds collected go to the Lower Valley Food Bank. Over the years, the event has generated about $300 per year.

The Empty Bowls Project is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger, created by The Imagine Render Group. According to their web site, “The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.” (www.emptybowls.net).

"My students are excited to host the event," commented Ms. Mandee Harrison, family and consumer science teacher, "and the art students have created beautifully crafted bowls to choose from."
