The Allegheny Valley School Board closed Colfax Upper Elementary School in 2018. Since then, the Board has voted to raise the building. This process will begin the week of October 14. At this time, planning continues on a specific timeline; the architect and contractor have applied for all necessary permits. The architect on the project is Canzian & Johnson Associates.
The project will begin with the removal of any asbestos in the building. The District’s contractor, Kane Speciality, will lead this process. AGX will monitor the removal daily, with Allegheny County providing additional inspections. The demolition of the school’s structure will follow. However, the building will not be razed until AGX is satisfied that the abatement requirements of the contract have been met and the building is cleared for demolition by the Allegheny County Health Department.
The District offers this letter as an attempt to provide neighbors with additional information on the project. On a regular basis, the District will send out newsletters on the project. Residents may also receive letter-updates, such as this one, to outline upcoming plans and provide further details on the project. In addition, a special section has been added to our website, www.avsdweb.org, to report on the project. It is our hope that these communication efforts will help relieve questions and concerns about the project.
However, if at any time you need to speak with a representative of the District, please contact Jay Zangrille, Building and Grounds Supervisor, at 724-312-3500 or jzangrille@avsd.school. In addition, if I can be of any help, feel free to contact me at
